In our SEES school community, we S.O.A.R., meaning that we demonstrate: Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility.

Dear Springfield Estates Families,

As we prepare to wrap up the year 2024, and begin winter break tomorrow, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible community we’ve built together. These past weeks have been filled with exciting learning experiences, meaningful connections, and a true sense of Eagle pride as our students continue to SOAR—being Supportive, Optimistic, Accepting, and Responsible in all they do.

Winter break is a time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with loved ones. As we step into the new year, I’m excited about the opportunities 2025 will bring for our students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Together, we will continue building a strong foundation for their success and creating a supportive environment where every child can thrive.

Thank you for being an essential part of our Springfield Estates family. Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a bright, happy New Year!

SEES December Spirit Days Reminder:  Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Allison Donnelly at [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Allison Donnelly at [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

Boundary Review Community Meeting

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on

Please register in advance by clicking on the date. Language interpretation will be available. If you are unable to attend on this date, view the full list of meetings on the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage.

Student Feedback Opportunity for FCPS Cell Phone Policy and SR&R

FCPS is working with K12 Insight to host a community forum for families, staff members, and students to provide feedback on the school division’s cell phone policies and practices, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. FCPS is looking for more student participants (grades 3-12) to help ensure diverse perspectives from our community.

The community forum will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center. If your student is interested in providing feedback, please visit the Cell Phone Policy Forum registration page to learn more. Families must register their child by Monday, November 25.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Register for ParentVUE

Learn how to activate your ParentVUE account, so you can easily access your child’s results and other helpful information.

❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

Dear Springfield Estates Elementary Families,

It’s been another exciting and SOARing week here at SEES! As we head into the busy holiday season, I want to take a moment to share some highlights and upcoming events that showcase the incredible spirit and engagement of our Eagle community.

Parent Engagement in Action: A big thank you to our wonderful Parent Liaison, Ms. Lili Burga Moncada, who led an informative session during this week’s PTA meeting. She shared valuable insights on how to use ParentVUE and Schoology to stay connected with your child’s academic progress. We’re thrilled to have Ms. Burga Moncada working alongside our families to strengthen those critical home-school connections.  If you need assistance from Ms. Burga Mancada you can reach her at [email protected]

Turkey Bingo is Almost Here! Mark your calendars and get ready for a night of family fun at our Annual Turkey Bingo on Friday, November 22, at 6:00 PM! This is one of our favorite traditions at Springfield Estates, and it’s an evening you won’t want to miss.

Here’s why:

  • Our amazing staff will be calling out the numbers, adding a personal touch to the excitement.
  • Fantastic prizes are up for grabs, and trust me, you’ll want to take these home!
  • Pre-order pizza to enjoy during the event (it’s always a hit with the kids).

We could still use a few more volunteers to help make this event a success. Whether you can assist with setup, handing out prizes, or cleanup, your help would make a big difference. Please check out the flier below for more information and details on how to RSVP or volunteer.

Don’t miss out—secure your spot and pizza today, and let’s make this Turkey Bingo a night to remember!

First Quarter Awards Assemblies: This week, we celebrated our students’ achievements during our First Quarter Awards Assemblies. It was a joy to honor their hard work, dedication, and growth in a variety of ways:

  • The Attendance Award celebrated students with outstanding attendance or significant improvement.
  • The Golden Eagle Award recognized those who consistently demonstrated top-notch Life, Work, and Citizenship skills.
  • Our new Rising Feather Award (introduced this year!) highlighted two students from each class for significant improvements in academics or behavior. Parents joined us to celebrate these shining moments.
  • The coveted Super SOARing Eagle Award went to four extraordinary students recognized from among positive office referrals, each spinning the prize wheel for a special reward.

Seeing our students’ faces light up as they received their awards was truly inspiring. A special thank you to the families who joined us—your support makes these moments even more meaningful.

As always, thank you for your partnership and for fostering a community where Eagles truly SOAR—supportive, optimistic, accepting, and responsible.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, and I hope to see you all at Turkey Bingo on Friday!

In our SEES school community, we S.O.A.R., meaning that we demonstrate: Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility.

Dear Springfield Estates Elementary Families,

This week has been full of wonderful moments here at Springfield Estates, and I am so proud of our Eagles community. This morning, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Muffins for Military breakfast, a heartfelt event where we came together to honor the sacrifices and commitments of our military families. Seeing so many of you join us as we recognized the incredible dedication and resilience of our military community was truly inspiring. Thank you to all who attended, and a special thank you to our veterans and their families, who bring such strength and dedication to our school. As a Purple Star School, supporting our military families is a key part of our mission, and we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate you. A huge thank you as well to Ms. Hardek for spearheading this meaningful event!

This November, we’re also thrilled to launch our Read-A-Fun Fundraiser, hosted by our amazing PTA. From now until the end of the month, we’ll be encouraging our Eagles to dive into books, set reading goals, and track their progress. Not only is this a fantastic way to foster a love of reading, but it also gives our students the chance to support our school through their dedication and hard work. Funds raised will go toward the PTA’s efforts to ensure every student has access to a wealth of knowledge and opportunities. I can’t wait to see how much reading our Eagles accomplish this month!

Thank you to our PTA and all families who continue to support our school through involvement, donations, and enthusiasm for learning. Together, we’re building a strong, supportive, and inspiring environment where our students can soar.

Let’s keep making it a fantastic November, Springfield Eagles! As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or ideas to help make Springfield Estates Elementary the best it can be for our students.

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Notes from the Nest

In our SEES school community, we S.O.A.R., meaning that we demonstrate: Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility.

Dear Springfield Estates Families,

What a wonderful week we’ve had here at Springfield Estates! Last Saturday, we kicked off the weekend with a fantastic turnout at our “Fall into Good Books: Book Fair and Literacy Event”. Families came together to celebrate the joy of reading, and it was heartwarming to see so many students excited about book character costumes, new books and literacy activities. Thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a memorable day!  The funds raised by our book fair go directly to supporting our library.

This week, our Multi-Lingual Leaders group—a team of 5th and 6th graders who are progressing in their English language journey—began mentoring younger Eagles who are also learning to navigate school in more than one language. It’s inspiring to see these students connect and support each other in the learning process.

A special shoutout to our ESOL team, Ms. Bates, Ms. Berman, and Ms. Getner, for organizing this valuable program. Their hard work reflects the heart of our community, showing us how we Eagles SOAR: Supportive, Optimistic, Accepting, and Responsible. Seeing our students embrace bilingualism as an asset highlights the strength and diversity within our school.

Before we sign off, a quick reminder: there will be no school tomorrow, Friday, November 1st to observe Diwali.  Monday and Tuesday are also days off for students, as our staff will be engaged in teacher training and parent/guardian conferences. We look forward to connecting with many of you during these conferences to celebrate your child’s growth and plan for continued success!

Thank you for your support, and enjoy the long weekend with your families!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

In our SEES school community, we S.O.A.R., meaning that we demonstrate: Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility.

Dear SEES Community,

Another week has flown by at SEES, and our Eagles continue to soar to new heights! This week, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Fall Cardboard Challenge. The theme, "Once upon a time at SEES," inspired our families and friends to create truly magical cardboard creations.

It was heartwarming to witness the teamwork, creativity, and joy that filled our school as participants worked together to bring their cardboard dreams to life. The results were nothing short of spectacular, and we encourage you to check out our social media pages for photos of these amazing creations.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the valuable contributions of our Hispanic/Latino community members. At SEES, we value diversity and strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. In our SEES school community, we S.O.A.R., meaning that we demonstrate: Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility. Together, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage and traditions of our Hispanic/Latino students, families, and staff.

We are already looking forward to our Spring Cardboard Challenge and can't wait to see what incredible ideas our community will come up with next time.

Sincerely,

April Martin

Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

  • 🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Read about how families can help form good attendance habits. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

  • ️ Parent/Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year! Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms will be sent in students folders on Friday, September 13th.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected] or by emailing Micaela Malachowski, the FLE Lead at SEES at [email protected].

🍽️Fueling Student Success: New Food Options Cooked up at FCPS

Students will have more than a dozen new options for lunch and breakfast in school cafeterias  starting this week. New menu items were either favorites at last year’s food show — including Korean BBQ wings, sweet Thai chili wings, chicken tikka masala, and barbacoa street tacos — or were tested with student focus groups and tastings.

View our school menu to see all the new options and when they will become available.

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, Empowered

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services' updates to lunch menus align with FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal #2 - Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered. The new menu options reflect the many voices and cultures represented around every FCPS lunch table!

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

As part of the second goal, we want each and every student to feel like they belong and have the support they need to thrive. See how Goal 2 is being put into practice

From the SEES PTA

The SEES PTA Board welcomes you to the 2024-2025 school year!  We are so excited about our plans to support the staff and students at SEES!

Thank you to everyone who has already joined the PTA this year!  If you haven’t joined yet, it’s not too late!  You can sign up online, by using the QR code on the flyer in today’s Friday Folder, or by sending the flyer back to SEES with your payment – just $10 per family!

We are getting the school year started with before and after school computer classes through our partnership with STEM exCEL!  For these programs to continue to be successful, a PTA representative is required at every session.  Their job is to chaperone the students while they participate in the class, making sure students are staying in the cafeteria and following school rules while the class is taking place. The PTA representative will make sure each student is picked up by a parent for the afternoon classes. Everyone who volunteers for this role will be entered in to a drawing for a free SEES sweatshirt this fall!  Please email our PTA President, Ashley Doss, at [email protected] to sign up!

Immunization Requirements

Please check with your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school

Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

Blue Star Welcome Week

Family and School Partnerships has created a toolkit to help you prepare for Blue Star Welcome Week, which takes place this year from Saturday, September 21, to Sunday, September 29.

There are approximately 13,500 military-connected students enrolled in FCPS. One-third of our military families transition into or out of our district each year. Blue Star Welcome Week allows schools to welcome and connect with their military families. The goal is to create a sense of belonging and ensure our military families feel celebrated and welcomed into their school communities.
