Dear SEES Community,

This week at SEES has been a true testament to the spirit of our school community – our Eagles have been soaring in their end of year testing, and we've witnessed incredible acts of generosity during Staff Appreciation Week.

Our amazing teachers and staff work tirelessly to create a nurturing and stimulating environment for our students.  This week, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of appreciation shown to them.   From the delicious lunches from Potbelly's on Wednesday to the sweet treats on Friday, organized by our fantastic PTA, to the beautiful flowers and heartfelt notes sent by students and families, your generosity truly humbled our staff.

It's moments like these that remind me just how special our school community is. The spirit of giving and appreciation displayed by our families fills me with immense pride.  Thank you for making SEES such a warm and supportive environment for both our students and staff.

Together, we continue to help our Eagles soar to new heights!

Yearbook Orders

Thank you to everyone who pre-ordered a yearbook!  We anticipate that they will be distributed in early June to students.

We will have a limited number of extra yearbooks to sell. To place your student’s name on the list for one of these, parents/guardians must call Jackie Trejo in our office by Wednesday, May 15.   We will process requests on a first-come, first-served basis.  These will be a basic yearbook at a cost of $20 each (payable in cash/check on delivery).   

From Our PTA

Elections were held this week (at our last meeting of this school year) for next year’s PTA Board.  The SEES PTA officers for 2024-2025 will be:  Ashley Doss – President, Bayla Feuerstein - Vice-President, Chad Sheldon - Treasurer, and Megan Brooks – Secretary.  We are looking forward to another great year filled with PTA-sponsored activities!  As the PTA transitions to the new board, please feel free to contact Megan in the office at SEES ([email protected]) over the summer with any questions, ideas or suggestions!

The PTA officers extend our great appreciation to William Samuel for his service as this year's Vice President. 

Register Today for FCPS Summer Camps

Registration for FCPS Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA/E-IFTA) camps closes on Friday, June 7. Tuition is waived for students eligible for free and reduced-price meals. Bus transportation is available from select FCPS high schools and middle schools. Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., for the FCPS Summer Extravaganza! Families are invited to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth. In addition to learning activities, enjoy tips and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Dear SEES Community,

This week, our amazing Eagles have been truly exemplifying our school motto – Together We S.O.A.R. with Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility!  It's been inspiring to see their dedication and consideration during SOL testing. They've been encouraging each other and putting their best foot forward, and we couldn't be prouder!

In other news, a gentle reminder that Kindergarten Registration is now open!  Attending kindergarten lays the foundation for lifelong learning and social skills.  Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about registration – we're here to support a smooth transition for all our new Eagles!

Speaking of transitions, our lost and found is overflowing!  Please take a moment to check for any misplaced treasures before May 17th, when unclaimed items will be donated.  Lost and found items are located outside the cafeteria.

As we celebrate diversity throughout the year, May also recognizes two important heritage months:  Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.  FCPS offers resources to learn more about the rich cultures and traditions within these communities.

Looking ahead to May, we have exciting Spring Band and String Concerts coming up, so stay tuned for details!  In the meantime, keep up the excellent work, Eagles!

Our SCA sponsored a food drive for ECHO - our Eagles brought in 437 items for a total of 326 lbs. collected and donated! ECHO is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides assistance to individuals/families in need within the Burke/Springfield community by offering food, clothing, housewares, and more.

Dear SEES Community,

What a fantastic week we've had here at Springfield Estates! It's been a whirlwind of activity, but all in the spirit of our school motto: "Together We SOAR"!

First, we celebrated Earth Day with a bang! Our Get2Green Team led a school beautification day, where students cleaned up litter, planted seeds in our new garden, painted rocks with inspiring messages, and decorated the sidewalks with colorful chalk art. It was a wonderful display of our students' Supportive nature and their commitment to taking care of our planet.

On Monday, we were honored to have Mr. Ronald Lusk, Franconia District Supervisor for the Board of Supervisors for Fairfax County Government, visit our school. He toured the classrooms and spoke with students about local government, fostering an Optimistic view of civic engagement in our young learners.

This week truly culminated with our incredible Heritage Night that was sponsored by our amazing PTA! Over 500 people joined us to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures represented in our school community. Families shared delicious food from all over the world, showcased student and family performances from many different backgrounds, and displayed informative visuals highlighting their home countries. As your principal, witnessing the Acceptance and joy students experience when they share their heritage is one of the highlights of my year. The traditional clothing and vibrant decorations added to the festive atmosphere.

Finally, we wrapped up the week by celebrating our amazing Military Kids Club! These students, who come from families connected to the military, have made new friendships and connections throughout the year. Their Responsibility and resilience are truly inspiring.

Looking ahead, next week marks the beginning of SOL testing. Please encourage your children to get a good night's sleep and enjoy a healthy breakfast each morning so they can feel their best and perform to their full potential. Additionally, a reminder that school will be closed next Friday for Good Friday.

I am so grateful for your continued support and partnership. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of our students!

6th Grade Families are invited to join us for our Family Coffee and Conversation: The Transition to Middle School, on Friday, May 10th, from 9:30-10:30 am in the Springfield Estates Cafeteria. Staff from Key and Twain Middle Schools will join us to answer all your questions. Information about summer programs for rising 7th graders and free school supplies will also be available.  A Spanish translator will be present. Please send a talking points message or email to Amy Garcia, [email protected] to request translation in another language. Please let us know you are coming by registering here. 

SACC registration is open for the 2024-25 school year and the Camp Fairfax summer program. Fairfax County Government’s School Age Child Care (SACC) program provides fun, safe, and educational care for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Care is available before school, after school, and during school breaks in select Fairfax County public elementary schools and community centers.

Looking ahead to next week, we'll be celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Week! We want to express our sincere gratitude to all the incredible volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to SEES.

2024 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award Nominations

Nominations are now open for the 2024 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award.  The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors this award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey by recognizing staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

If you know of some outstanding equity work here at Springfield Estates, please consider nominating that person or team for this award. Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1, 2024.  The winner will be recognized in person at the FCPS Equity Symposium!

Dear SEES Community,

This week at Springfield Estates has been another example of our motto in action: SOARing with Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility.  The classrooms have been a hive of activity as students gear up for the state tests starting the week of April 29th. Remember, Eagles, these assessments are important, but they definitely don't define you! We, at SEES, believe in the whole child, and we know each of you brings so much more than a score to the table.

Now, let's celebrate some of the amazing things that happened this week!

School Happenings:

• 2nd Grade: Students are diving deep into their book clubs.  They are learning how characters change throughout the story.  
• 3rd Grade:  Students are learning about Ancient Greece and its contributions to our society today.  
• 6th Grace: Students are learning how to become more proficient persuasive writers!  They are considering their audience and the strength of their argument for or against a topic.  

And to add to the excitement, many of our students got a chance to witness a celestial wonder this week – the Solar Eclipse! It was a truly awe-inspiring moment, reminding us of the vastness of the universe and the power of science.

Looking Ahead:

Get ready to show your spirit, Eagles!  Next week is the Month of the Military Child, and we'll be celebrating our amazing military-connected families with a different theme each day. See above for details!

We also have a chance to give back to our community! The Student Council Association (SCA) is hosting a food drive for ECHO, a non-profit organization that provides vital assistance to families in Springfield by offering food, clothing, and more.  From April 15th to April 19th, we'll be collecting canned and dry goods to help those in need. Let's show our community spirit by donating generously!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Coming Soon

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener in late February, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

From Our Family Liaison 

April is the Month of the Military Child (MOMC) and Wednesday, April 17th, is Purple Up! Day. This month-long celebration of FCPS military-connected students raises awareness and recognizes the resilience of military-connected youth and thanks them for their service as part of a military family. There are currently more than 14,000 military-connected students enrolled in Fairfax County. Here at Springfield Estates we have 44 military connected students, please join us in honoring them by wearing purple on Wednesday, April 17th! Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green; Marine Corps red; and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force blue.

Register Today for the FCPS Family Summit!  Registration is open for the FCPS Family Summit, which will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

What a short, whirlwind of learning and fun we've had this week at Springfield Estates! We'll be witnessing a partial solar eclipse, and teachers will be reaching out directly to families with details about any planned outdoor viewing activities. Connect with other SEES parents and hear from a guest speaker from the FCPS Family Resource Center.  Learn about resources that can help you support your students, as well as community resources and recreation opportunities for students with special needs. Fairfax County Therapeutic Recreation Services Summer Camps

Therapeutic Recreation offers affordable summer camp experiences for individuals (ages 2-22) with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and/or attention deficit disorders. The summer will be packed full of special events, art activities, sensory play, games, sports, outdoor play, music activities and more. Registration opens April 10th. From Key Middle School Key MS Town Hall Meetings

Dear Key Middle School Community,

I am pleased to invite you to an informational town hall meeting on Thursday, April 4th at 6:00 PM or our parent coffee on Friday, April 5th at 9:30 AM. Both events will be held in the school’s Lecture Hall. At these meetings, we will go into greater detail about the two new developments for Key MS described below.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) recently released the schools that have been identified as being in need of support, based on Virginia’s federal accountability system under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Key Middle School is on this list.

These designations are based on a complex set of factors. Our school was identified as being in need of support in math and reading  for students with disabilities. At the town hall and parent coffee, I will explain more about what this designation means, how we have been addressing these gaps, and what additional efforts will be put into place to support students.

I am also excited to share that Key Middle School is now a school designated to receive Federal Title I Grant Funds starting in the 2024-2025 school year.  Title I represents a powerful opportunity to further support the success of all our students.

Title I funding allows us to allocate additional resources to directly impact student achievement. These resources can be used in a variety of ways, including:

• Implementing innovative educational programs that are geared toward students’ needs to ensure all students reach high expectations.
• Building strong partnerships with families through developing a family and school engagement policy, including families in the planning of school and family partnership opportunities, and offering a variety of family meetings and experiences. 
• Expanding intervention and enrichment programs.
• Providing supplemental professional learning experiences for teachers and administrators.
• Supplying additional high quality instructional materials that will enhance student learning experiences.
• Additional staffing to support interventions, enrichment, and specific areas of opportunity for the school.

We believe that a strong school community is essential for student success. Leveraging our existing strengths, Title I funding allows us the opportunity to further enrich and enhance a supportive learning environment for all our students. We will be able to provide you with more information about our new Title I designation and answer your questions at the town hall meetings on April 4th and April 5th.

Working together, we can ensure that each and every student at Key Middle School is prepared for a future yet to be imagined. I hope to see you on April 4th or April 5th to share more detailed information and answer any questions you may have about both of these important topics.

Solar Eclipse Information

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. 

Here's what you need to know:

• Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
• Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.  
• Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

What a whirlwind week it's been at Springfield Estates, Eagles! We're soaring high with excitement as we close out a fantastic third quarter and prepare for a well-deserved Spring Break

This week, we witnessed incredible teamwork and creativity at our annual Cardboard Challenge! Family teams collaborated on amazing cardboard creations around the theme of, “What would an alien do over Spring Break?”  The cafeteria was full with laughter, friendly competition, and maybe some fun mayhem from Mrs. “Mayhem” Martin. It was truly a sight to behold, and a testament to the strong sense of community we share here at SEES

A Gentle Reminder: As a heads-up, next week marks Spring Break! School and offices will be closed from March 25 to March 29, giving everyone a chance to recharge and spend quality time with loved ones.  

We are incredibly proud of all our students' accomplishments this quarter. They've tackled challenging concepts, grown as individuals, and demonstrated the true meaning of SOARing (Supportive, Optimistic, Accepting, Responsible) every step of the way.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready to learn on April 3, 2024. Until then, enjoy a relaxing and joyful Spring Break, Eagles!

2024-2025 PTA Board

ARRIVALS, DISMISSALS, TRANSPORTATION & SAFETY 

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Police Department, we are sending out the following guidelines. Please remember that our school is situated in a neighborhood, and drivers must adhere to the traffic rules and regulations in place.

Thank you for helping us to keep our students safe, reduce traffic congestion around our school, and be respectful of our neighborhood!

Families choosing to travel to SEES by car MUST use our Kiss & Ride Line.  

• Students cannot be dropped-off/picked-up on the street in front of or behind the school.
• Students cannot be let out of the car in the middle of the street.
• Drivers cannot double-park, especially on Meriwether Lane.
• Do not block driveways at any time. Parking is not allowed within 10 feet of driveways.
• Do not park next to the yellow curb in the bus loop directly in front of SEES. These areas are reserved as bus-loading/unloading zones.
• See the section below for details on using Kiss & Ride at SEES. 

Walkers

• All walkers use Door #7. 
• Door #7 is only staffed until 9:20 am for arrivals. If you arrive after that time, please escort your child to Door #1 at the front of the school. 
• All Kindergarteners must be met and walked home with a family member who is 16 years of age or older.  All other walkers should walk home immediately after leaving the building. 

• Children who leave school as ‘’walkers’’ are considered to be walking directly home and are not supervised once they exit the building. Children may not leave as a ‘walker’ to then meet a parent at a car parked in our neighborhood. 

Kiss & Ride

• Students using Kiss & Ride are dismissed to our cafeteria where they are supervised until called out to their car. 
• Our Kiss & Ride line operates from Deepford Street (behind SEES) – turn into our side parking lot and follow the car line/instructions.  Kiss & Ride is staffed until 9:20 am in the mornings and begins to shut down around 4:15 pm in the afternoon.  
• Drivers remain in the car at all times. Please do not pass other cars in the Kiss & Ride line at any time unless directed by a staff member.  Your SEES Kiss & Ride Car Tag must be displayed on your rearview mirror. Please pull forward as directed by staff.  Students will be called by number when parents arrive in the Kiss & Ride line to pick them up.
• Children enter and exit on the right (passenger) side of the vehicle. 

• If you arrive by car after school starts, please park in a designated parking spot and bring your student to our main entrance (Door #1) and sign them in at the front office.  Do not drop them off at our main entrance as this is our bus loop. 

Bus Riders

• Families should be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes prior to the listed pick-up time.  PreK and Kindergarten riders must be met by an authorized guardian. 
• Transportation can be reached directly at 703-446-2150.
• Daily bus delays are listed at www.busdelay.fcps.edu.

• Families can sign up for the FCPS Here Comes the Bus App to receive real-time bus location information.  Search ‘’Here Comes the Bus’’ at FCPS.edu for details. 

Same Day Dismissal Changes

Same day dismissal changes, including planned early pick-ups of students, must be communicated to the front office in writing prior to 3:30 pm (an email to [email protected] is preferred). 

• A note to the classroom teacher is also appreciated BUT, as classroom teachers may not have an opportunity to check their email before the end of the day, all dismissal changes MUST be communicated to the front office. 
• If your child is being picked up during their Specials time (music, PE, art, etc.), please allow additional time for them to return to their classroom to pack up their belongings.  
• If your child attends SACC, be sure to also let the SACC staff know of a dismissal change as SACC operates separately from FCPS.

On Monday, March 18, SEES parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

Dear SEES Community,

I hope this letter finds you SOARing high! I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the exciting accomplishments and activities from the past week here at SEES. 

Hold on to Your Hats: I want to commend our students and staff for their exemplary behavior during our recent tornado drill. It's crucial that we prioritize safety, and their cooperation and readiness were truly impressive. 

Hear the Music: Additionally, we were treated to a wonderful performance by the Lewis High School choir. It was a delightful experience for our students, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to enjoy their talent and hard work.

Time has Soared by and SOL’s are Just Around the Corner: I'm pleased to announce that the SOL testing calendar is now available. It’s time to spread our wings and prepare to showcase our knowledge and skills.  Please ensure to review the calendar carefully, and let's work together to support our students as they prepare for these important assessments.

School-Based Administrator Performance Evaluation Program SY2023-24

On Monday, March 18, SEES parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. 

All students at SEES are offered an alternate space during the lunch period instead of the cafeteria during Ramadan.  Teachers will be checking in with students to learn their preference prior to the start of Ramadan.  Parents are also welcome to contact the teacher to share their request and any questions or concerns.

Elementary Institute for the Arts and Camp Fairfax

Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts. E-IFTA is a weekly Arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades during the month of July. Students take classes in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance every day. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. Camp Fairfax (summer SACC) registration opens March 12, using a staggered registration process. A sliding fee scale is available for income eligible families. For questions or more information visit the Camp Fairfax website or contact Camp Fairfax registration at 703-449-8989.

I'm thrilled to share another week filled with exciting learning and community spirit at Springfield Estates! This week was a whirlwind of activities, each showcasing the incredible talents and dedication of our students, staff, and families.

Spelling Bee Spectacular!

Our annual spelling bee took center stage this week, showcasing the impressive vocabulary and poise of our students. The competition was fierce, with words becoming progressively more challenging with each round. In the end, three champions emerged victorious:

• First Place: Anusha S., with the winning word “hitherto”!
• Second Place: Hisham S., demonstrating exceptional spelling skills.
• Third Place: Elizabeth A., proving her dedication and knowledge.

Congratulations to all our participants for their hard work and commitment to learning! A special shout-out to our champion speller, who will represent our school at the next level competition. We know you'll make us proud!

Celebrating Black History Month:

On February 21, we held our annual Black History Month assembly, a vibrant and moving celebration of culture, history, and achievement. The assembly featured a variety of performances, including:

• Powerful songs and spoken word pieces by our talented students, reflecting on the themes of resilience, hope, and inspiration.
• Original readings written by students, showcasing their research and understanding of important figures and events in Black history.

The assembly was a powerful reminder of the important role Black history plays in shaping our world, and the ongoing fight for equality and justice. We were all inspired by the passion and dedication of our students and staff in making this event such a success.

From Our Family Liaision

Please join us for a Family Coffee and Conversation on Wednesday, March 6th from 5:15-6:00 pm in the Springfield Estates Cafeteria. The topic is, “An Overview of Elementary Advanced Academic Programs.” Ms. Donnelly, the SEES Advanced Academic Resource Teacher will present and answer questions.  Learn about the FCPS levels of services and how all students are provided challenging learning experiences. Operation Purple Camp is a free one-week overnight camp exclusively for military kids that creates a space for them to celebrate all the ways Military Kids Serve Too®. Both active duty and veteran families are eligible. Select a camp location near you and apply today! The application will be open until March 15. After March 15, you can apply and be placed on the waitlist. Two informational Zoom meetings on Tuesday, March 5, at 6pm OR 9pm will be held about the camp. There is also a virtual Operation Purple Summer Challenge, offering military families all around the globe the opportunity to connect, have fun, and try new things from the comfort of their home. The SEES Book Fair is coming soon!  This year the book fair will run from Thursday, February 29-Wednesday, March 6.  Students will go to the library with their classes to browse, and purchases can be made beginning Saturday, March 2 from 9am-noon.  This is a great opportunity for the whole family to participate in literacy activities, enjoy read alouds from our Reading Specialist, and check out our great selection of books!

Your commitment to academics, character development, and responsible citizenship sets a fantastic example for your peers.

Moreover, I'm truly honored to present the Super SOARing Eagle Award to three phenomenal students who have gone above and beyond in the 2nd quarter. These individuals exemplify the SOAR principles of Supportive, Optimistic, Accepting, and Responsible in what they do. Their dedication, leadership, and positive impact on our school community deserve special recognition.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades. 

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Greetings, everyone! As we reach the end of another exciting week, it's time to reflect on some special happenings at SEES!

Learning Beyond the Walls: February's PTA meeting was a fantastic success! We had the opportunity to showcase our incredible community partnerships with local businesses, ensuring our students receive enriching experiences beyond the classroom. A big thank you to our partners for supporting our young minds!

Kiss & Ride Reminders: A friendly reminder from our local police department: please be mindful of blocking driveways and roads during kiss and ride. Remember, following traffic laws keeps everyone safe. Let's work together to make drop-off and pick-up as smooth as possible!

Calling All PTA Superheroes! Our amazing PTA is seeking volunteers for several upcoming events. It's a fantastic way to connect with the community, contribute to your child's education, and have some fun! Join the PTA meeting next month to learn more and unleash your inner superhero!

Gearing Up for Middle School: Exciting news for our 6th graders! Representatives from Key Middle School visited us this week to prepare them for the upcoming course selection process. Remember, honors classes aren't just for a select few. If your child loves a subject and thrives on a challenge, encourage them to consider these options!

100 Days Smarter, Stronger, Soaring Higher! This week, we celebrated a momentous milestone: the 100th day of school! From fun activities to creative dress-up, our students enjoyed marking this achievement. Looking back, we can't help but be amazed at how much they've grown in just 100 days. They're not just smarter and stronger, they're soaring higher than ever!

From Our Family Liaison Summer Camp Registration: Elementary Institute for Fine Arts, Tech Adventure Camp, Camp Fairfax and Rec Pac

Registration for two FCPS summer camps, Elementary Institute for Fine Arts (E-IFTA) and Tech Adventure Camp, opened February 1st.  E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students who love to sing, dance, perform, make and create.  Tech Adventure Camp is a summer enrichment and exploratory program in career and technical education. Tuition waivers for students who receive free and reduced meals are available.

Mark your calendars for Camp Fairfax (summer SACC) registration which opens March 12, using a staggered registration process. A sliding fee scale is available for income eligible families. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/office-for-children/summer/sacc. Rec Pac registration also opens March 12th. Rec-PAC is a six-week, structured recreation program operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority for rising 1st-6th graders. Participants enjoy activities such as fitness, indoor and outdoor games, team sports, nature, crafts, special events, talent shows and play sessions. Attendance Accolades!

A standing ovation to everyone who participated in our Attendance Matters Poster Contest! Submissions poured in, brimming with creativity and a shared commitment to good attendance. Thank you for showcasing your artistic talents and reminding us of the power of being present in school.

Next week, the spotlight shines on our Eagles! They will get ready to cast their class vote for favorite poster design. Let's celebrate individual expression while reinforcing the importance of showing up, learning together, and supporting each other's success.

Black History Month: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

February dawns, ushering in Black History Month! This time of reflection honors the invaluable contributions of Black Americans who have shaped our nation's story. Throughout the month, we'll delve into enriching activities and discussions, expanding our understanding and appreciation of Black history and achievements.

On February 21, student work and performances inspired by Black heroes and historical figures will paint a vibrant and powerful picture (due to space limitations, we are only able to accommodate parents of performers to this event). This promises to be a learning experience that fosters understanding and celebrates the diverse perspectives that enrich our community. Thank you to Ms. Moman for spearheading this special activity.

As we step into the weekend, let's carry the spirit of S.O.A.R. and be supportive, optimistic, accepting, and responsible.

Dear SEES Families,

Happy Friday! As we reach the halfway point of the school year and close out the second quarter, we wanted to take a moment to share some exciting updates and express our immense pride in all our Eagles.  Look for report cards to go home soon.  

Growth Takes Flight: We're witnessing incredible progress in our students' academics and citizenship. Teachers are diligently reviewing student work and finalizing marks for Quarter 2, and the results are truly inspiring. Each day, we see our Eagles soaring higher, reaching new heights in their learning and development. 

Community Partnerships Boost Our Wings: We're thrilled to announce a brand-new partnership with our local Dunkin' Donuts off of Backlick Road with the generous support of Vigario Management Corp. Their commitment to SEES echoes our belief in the power of good attendance, and together, we'll help every Eagle reach their full potential.

Art for Attendance: Speaking of soaring, our friends at Wendy's have joined the flight too! They've donated delicious coupons to fuel our "Attendance Matters" poster contest. We're inviting students from every grade level to unleash their creativity and show us how good attendance helps them soar. Who knows, your child's artistic vision might just win them a yummy treat!

Eagles on the Move: Some exciting news on the staff front: Mr. Boubacar (Mr. B), one of our school counselors, will be taking a leave of absence to serve our country on active duty. We're incredibly proud of his dedication and service, and we look forward to welcoming him back with open wings in the 2024-2025 school year.

Meanwhile, a big round of applause for Mr. Gary Robinson, who has been promoted to Assistant Building Supervisor! You can often find him brightening our halls with his smile and dedication, whether ensuring the cafeteria runs smoothly or tackling every task to keep SEES sparkling. Thank you, Mr. Gary, for truly embodying the SEES spirit!

Shoveling with Gratitude: And lastly, a huge shoutout to our amazing custodians – Ms. Liz, Mr. Gary, Ms. Gifty, and Ms. Mary – who answered the call during our recent snowstorms. Without a moment's hesitation, they came in on a Saturday to shovel out SEES, ensuring safety and warmth for our students come Monday. Your dedication and service are truly heroic!

As we continue this incredible journey together, remember, the sky's the limit for our SEES Eagles! We're committed to providing them with the support, opportunities, and partnerships they need to soar on wings of learning and growth. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
